Happy Earth Day! We have come a long way since that first Earth Day celebration in 1970 (but of course there is so much further to go).
The first Earth Day featured U.S. Senator Edmund Muskie as the keynote speaker. Muskie was the author of Clean Air Act of 1970 (and sponsor of significant water pollution legislation), so a perfect fit. In addition to a cavalcade of prominent speakers, musicians such as the Native American band “Redbone” and the cast of the hit Broadway musical “Hair” performed. That day, the educational celebration was the subject of a 1 hour CBS News Special Report hosted by Walter Cronkite. Yeah, it was kind of a big deal.
Earth Day Today
Every school child can tell you when Earth Day is and what it is about now. While there is still a good deal of education, environmental clean-up to do, and legislative battles to be fought, there are many companies catering to consumers demands for products free of artificial dyes, fragrances, flavors and preservatives. The old images of “dirty hippies” have been replaced by fresh “crunchy moms”, thanks in part to companies such as Tom’s of Maine (started the same year as Earth Day).
Target Made to Matter collection
Target is now featuring a new line of products from Tom’s of Maine, exclusive to their stores. All the products are free of artificial dyes, fragrances, flavors and preservatives, and are never tested on animals. The Made to Matter collection so far consists of Tom’s of Maine Luminous White Toothpaste, Wicked Cool! Deodorant (for kids), and North Woods Antiperspirant (for the guys).
We use Tom’s of Maine toothpaste often in my home, so we were eager to try this new variety.
So far my daughter doesn’t need deodorant, but that age is approaching. In preparation, we checked out the Wicked Cool! deodorant for girls while we in the store. She liked the scent and I liked that it is free of aluminum, parabens & artificial fragrance. When the issue arrives, I have piece of mind, that I can just pop into Target and buy her odor protection.
We both ended out liking the gluten & paraben free Luminous White Toothpaste. The flavor is a nice mild mint. It is plenty to refresh our breath, yet not too overpowering for my daughter, like some toothpastes. It is Tom’s of Maine’s most advanced natural whitening toothpaste and is safe for enamel (a big concern for me).
Sparkling teeth and fresh breath for us this Earth Day. I will definitely be buying this toothpaste again.
