My sweet girl is quickly approaching her seventh birthday, but is still almost entirely non-verbal, due to autism. She struggles with motor control issues each day, to try and learn to do the basic things most kids her age can whiz through. After she gets off the bus from school, four days a week she has 3 hours of in-home ABA therapy to get through, and on the other day, I pick her up from school for an hour of speech therapy. Despite all this, she is generally a happy little girl. Sure she gets frustrated at times (who wouldn’t), but her demeanor is loving and sweet. She charms and brings happiness to those whose lives she touches.
While I teach her living skills, she teaches me so much more, about strength, optimism and rolling with what life deals you. I am honored to have her as my daughter. When I sing our own version of “You are my Sunshine” to her, the words could not be more true.
