This puff pastry pizza recipe is easy to prepare and a fun twist on traditional pizza. The vegetarian puffed pastry pizza is a great main dish for pizza night or serve as a delicious and easy appetizer.
The puff pastry dough is covered with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, veggie pizza toppings and fresh basil. Of course you can swap the toppings you put on the puff pastry crust a bit, even add Lean meats if not vegetarian. There are limitless puff pastry pizza recipes to start from this basic recipe.
Puff Pastry as Pizza Crust
Using pastry for making pizza is a tasty variation on traditional pizza. While the swap is incredibly easy to make and you can add most of your favorite toppings, I recommend staying away from greasy meats, too many wetter toppings or overdoing it on sauce. The flaky pastry already has quite a bit of fat in it and we don't want the crust to get soggy.
How to Make Puff Pastry Pizza
Let's make this delicious and super easy twist on homemade pizza. I'll show you how, step-by-step with pictures, or feel free to jump down to the printable recipe card if you prefer.
The recipe makes 8 slices.
Prep Time: 10 minutes Baking Time: 20 minutes
Puff Pastry Pizza Ingredients:
Here is all you will need to prepare the pizza.
- 1 sheet of puff pastry (a typical package will make two pizzas)
- olive oil or melted butter, to baste top of crust
- ¼ cup pizza sauce (or pesto sauce) store bought or homemade
- 4 oz shredded mozzarella cheese or pizza cheese blend
- 1 tomato, sliced
- ¼ cup baby spinach leaves
- ¼ cup black olives
- ¼ cup red onions
- fresh basil leaves for garnish (and grated Parmesan cheese if you like)
Instructions:
Thaw your puff pastry at room temperature for 40 minutes.
Preheat oven to 425 F and line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
Unroll the thawed sheet of pastry onto the lined baking sheet. Use a rolling pin to roll the pizza dough to desired size and to flatten out the creases. I rolled mine to about 10x14 inches.
Use the tip of a knife to score a border about ½ inch from the edge of the puff pastry sheet. Be careful not to cut all the way through.
Lightly brush the entire pastry sheet with oil and transfer it to the sheet pan. Bake for 10 minutes in preheated oven, until golden.
Wash and slice your vegetable toppings. Set aside.
Once the puff pastry is done baking, it will be puffed up. Spoon on the sauce and spread it evenly in a thin layer within the border.
Top with mozzarella cheese and veggie toppings. Remember not to overcrowd or add too many toppings. Doing so can result in a soggy puff pastry pizza.
Put it in the oven to cook for another 10-12 minutes.
Once fully cooked and out of the oven, garnish with sliced basil leaves or other fresh herbs and serve immediately. I don't recommend you eat this as cold pizza.
Other Toppings
Looking for some different topping ideas for pastry pizzas? Here are some of my favorite pizza toppings that will work well and taste amazing with a puff pastry crust, rather than regular pizza dough.
- sliced white button or baby bella mushrooms
- shredded chicken
- sliced bell peppers
- sprinkle on other types of cheese, such as crumbles feta or blue cheese
- use fresh mozzarella cheese instead of shredded
- swap cheddar for half the cheese
- red pepper flakes, to spice it up
- roasted garlic
- crumbled ground beef (well drained)
- sun-dried tomatoes
- deli ham
- pepperoni (preferably a lower fat type)
- roasted red peppers
- ... or most other pizza toppings you love
In addition to mixing the toppings up, you can also make smaller puff pastry pizzas. These are great for individual servings. Bake time will need to be slightly reduced.
