Penguin Painted Rocks for Christmas
This inexpensive Christmas painted rocks craft is so cute and quite giftable. They would be fabulous nestled on a fleece tree skirt and any penguin lover would be thrilled with these under a tree decorated with my DIY Felt Penguin Ornaments too!
Give them a weatherproof clear coat and these little penguins could be displayed outside as well.
Making Christmas Painted Rocks Penguins
Let's do some Christmas rock painting! Great craft to get the kids involved in too.
Supplies to Make:
- white, gray, black and orange multi purpose satin craft paints
- paint brushes, flat and pointed
- 3 beach rocks (2 larger, one smaller)
Tips:
Full directions for painting the rocks complete with step-by-step process pictures are in the printable card below.
While the flat brush is used to paint larger areas and pointed brush handles most details.
The end of a brush is used to dot on the eyes.
Also make sure to dry each layer of paint before adding the next.

Penguin Painted Rocks
Equipment
- Paintbrush - ½” flat paint brush and angled fine tip paint brush
Ingredients
- Set of 3 rocks largest rock to measure 3” long, all in differing shapes and sizes and all with a smooth surface
Multi Surface Satin Paints
- white Cotton Ball
- gray Dolphin Grey
- black Black Tie
- orange Orange Sherbet
Instructions
- Wash and dry 3 beach rocks. Tow larger ones fro penguin couple and a smaller rock for baby penguin. Place on paper cover surface to paint.
- Using a flat tipped paint brush, paint the top side of the two larger rocks in white (Cotton Ball) and the small rock gray (Dolphin grey).
- Using an angled fine tip paint brush, paint the surrounding shape of each the penguins in black (Black Tie) as shown. When happy with the shape, paint the perimeter and back side of the rocks fully in Black Tie.
- Using a fine tip paint brush, paint a small upside down triangle in Orange Sherbet for each beak.
- Paint two small rounded rectangular shapes in Orange Sherbet for the feet of each penguin.
- Dip the back end of your fine tip paint brush in Black Tie and dab the end on to the rocks for the circular shaped eyes. Once fully dry they are ready to display or gift!
Notes
Wash the rocks and let them dry completely before painting.
Allow paint to fully dry between steps and when changing to a new color.
Repeat with as many coats as needed to achieve desired coverage.
