Homemade apple pie spice is super easy to prepare and is not only great for your baking, but makes a lovely DIY gift too. The apple pie spice mix recipe is made up of just four ingredients. The blend of cinnamon, ginger, allspice and cardamom is a classic blend of sweet spices, essential for apple season.
I've included 2 different printable labels as well, so the apple pie spice presents nicely in fall gift baskets or sitting out on your counter. You will be all ready to make apple pies, baked apples, oatmeal, and a host of other autumn treats!
Homemade Apple Pie Spice Blend
I noticed at the market today the size of the spice jar offered for apple pie spice was rather small. Like, seriously, making apple french toast for the family once would wipe out the majority of it. I hadn't made my own in a few years, but the scant container motivated me to make a batch of the homemade spice blend I've enjoyed so much in the past.
Now you can make it too, or even double up and give a jar to a friend who enjoys spice blends. If you take a trip to the orchard, you definitely need some of this spice recipe waiting for you when you get home with all those apples.

Q & A
Yes. If you prefer you can swap in 1 ½ teaspoons ground nutmeg for the cardamom. It is also a commonly added to apple pie.
While cloves are not necessary in apple pie spice, by all means add some ground clove if you wish, after all one of the benefits of mixing your own is adjusting to personal taste. I advise, you go lightly though as the spice is strong. Perhaps a quarter to a half teaspoon.
While the two homemade spice mixes are similar, they aren't quite interchangeable. The main difference is pumpkin spice contains ground cloves, while the seasoning for apple pie does not. Cardamom is not in pumpkin pie spice, but is often in apple pie seasoning.
