How to Make Garlic Parmesan Chicken Wings
Making crispy Parmesan Garlic Wings is easy in either the air fryer or the oven. Here I'll show you how to do it both ways with follow along pictures, or hop down to the printable recipe card if you prefer (both methods are on the card as well).
The recipe makes 6 servings.
Prep time: 8 mins Air Fry: 22 mins (OR) Bake: 40 mins
Ingredients needed for the chicken wings:
- 3 pounds chicken wings (process by splitting in two at joint, remove wing tip)
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- ¼ cup grated fresh Parmesan cheese
- ½ teaspoon Kosher salt
- 2 large cloves of garlic, crushed ( or ½ teaspoon garlic powder)
- 3 tablespoon melted butter, unsalted
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- ½ teaspoon granulated onion powder
Supplies:
- baking sheet with parchment or an air fryer
- paper towels for blotting chicken peices
How To Cut Chicken Wings
Some wings come already processed, but if yours aren't no worries. Cutting chicken wings is a simple task just requires a sharp knife and a cutting board.
To begin, place the wings on the cutting board and use a sharp knife to cut off the tips of each wing and discard. Next, locate the joint between the two sections of each wing and cut through the joint to separate them into two pieces, wingettes (also called flats) and drumettes.
Directions:
To start, pat the chicken wings dry with paper towel to ensure seasonings adhere.
Place chicken wing parts in a deep bowl, add garlic, salt, spices, and oil.
Thoroughly mix the wings so that all the chicken skin and meat is well coated. If you wish, you can cover the bowl with cling film and leave for 30-60 minutes to marinate.
Then bake or air fry the coated Parmesan garlic chicken wings.
For Baked Garlic Parmesan Wings
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F and line a large rimmed baking sheet pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
The best oven temperature for wings such as this is 400 F, those with sweet sauces are better baked at 375 F for slightly longer time.
Place the chicken wings on lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
Flip the wings over and bake another 15-20 minutes then you can remove them from the oven and apply final coating mixture.
For Air Fryer Crispy Garlic Parmesan Wings
Preheat the air fryer to 390 degrees F.
Arrange the wings in the air fryer basket in a single layer with a little space between for air flow. Cook for 15 minutes.
Flip the wings over and air fryer for another 7 minutes.
Coat the Wings
After baking or air frying melt butter and apply final coating.
Dump the hot wings into a large bowl. Pour the melted butter over the chicken wings and toss to coat. Sprinkle on the Parmesan cheese and lightly toss again. When well coated serve immediately in a bowl or serving platter. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley or basil if you like.
Variations on the Wing Recipe
A few simple changes to these Garlic Parmesan chicken wings that may suit your palette.
- For true garlic lovers, add an extra ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder to the the melted butter to make a quick homemade garlic butter sauce to toss the wings in at the end. Fresh garlic cloves can be used instead of garlic powder, but as it will be raw, it will be quite pungent. Of course, you could lightly sauté the garlic sauce to reduce that.
- Spice it up! Add a pinch or two of crushed red pepper flakes along with the other spices. Another option would be to splash a little hot sauce or Buffalo wing sauce into the butter coating at the end.
- Other seasonings you might like to add are smoked paprika or Italian seasoning. A ½ teaspoon of either should be enough.
- Make the recipe with chicken drumsticks, refer to my Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks recipe for reference.
How to Make Extra Crispy Wings
For extra crispy chicken wings, skip the oil in original coating and add 1 ½ tablespoon of baking powder to the spices. For baked chicken wings elevate the wings on a wire cooling rack coated with nonstick cooking spray, placed over a sheet pan (air frying cooking method remains the same, just swap the ingredients). The alkalinity of the baking powder creates super crispy skin and the wire rack allows air to circulate.
