Peach Dump cake is the most popular of all dump cake recipes and for good reason. Dump cakes are simple desserts to prepare and this easy peach dump cake recipe only needs 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes of hands on time to prepare to be baked. You don't even need to mix batter!
Dessert is often referred to as a peach cobbler dump cake, since the results are similar to that simple dessert. Grab a box of cake mix, one or two cans sliced peaches and some butter and with these simple ingredients we are ready to make this easy Peach Dump cake!
Peach Cobbler Dump Cake
Much like peach cobbler, this easy peach dump cake is a casual dessert perfect for finishing simple family dinners such as Kielbasa and Potatoes, Chicken Fajita Pasta or Crockpot Tuna Casserole. It's also a great choice to bring to pot lucks and cook outs.
The old fashioned peach dump cake is crazy easy, so a nice choice for fledgling cooks. Kids will get a kick out of how the dry cake mix tossed on with utter turns into a sweet pastry crust like topping with both a soft and crunchy texture. This inexpensive foolproof dessert will become one of your go-to dessert recipes. The ingredients for this family favotite are so easy to keep on-hand too.
Of course, this is a fabulous summer peach dessert, but as it uses canned fruit you can make it any time of year. Peach dump cake is a great way to brighten up a dreary cold day!
Dump Cakes
While this peach dump cake is my most popular, I have quite a few dump cakes here on the blog. While there is some variation in the directions, they are all prepared in a very similar way.
To make a dump cake, pie filling or syrup packed fruit is sprinkled with dry cake mix, then oil or melted butter is drizzled on top. The simple yet delicious dessert is then baked until the crust topping is fully cooked.
Some like my Caramel Apple Dump Cake and Chocolate Cherry Dump Cake with Fudge also have another layer between the fruit base and boxed cake mix layer. These are particularly good with ice cream!
How to Make Peach Dump Cake
Let's make a peach dump cake. It's super easy and printable recipe card can be found below.
The recipe makes 8-10 servings.
Prep Time: 5 mins Cooking Time: 55 mins Total time: 1 hour
Peach Dump Cake Ingredients
Here is everything you will need to make a regular peach dump cake with canned fruit.
- 1 can of peaches in heavy syrup or peach pie filling (if you are a hardcore peach lover, you may use 2 cans of peaches... just drain the second can of syrup) NOTE: While heavy syrup is recommended, yes, you can make this dessert with peaches in juice.
- 1 box of yellow cake mix (If you don't have yellow cake mix on hand, vanilla, butter or white cake mix will do. Just don't be mixing flavors that will clash.)
- ¾ cup butter (while butter will taste best in the recipe, you can use oil if you prefer)
You will also need
- 9x13 baking dish
- cooking spray or Crisco to coat baking dish
Preparing Peach Dump Cake
First preheat oven to 350 F (180°C). Then cut the butter into chunks and melt. Use the microwave in 30 second intervals, or melt in a small pan over low-medium heat.
Coat your casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray or grease the dish.
Dump in your canned peaches in syrup. Spread the fruit filling out. If you opt to use two cans of sliced peaches, make sure to drain one of them.
Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the peaches and spread out.
Pour melted butter evenly over the top of the even layer of cake mix. Cover as much surface as you can, without getting too fussy.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 55 minutes. When top is bubbly and edges are golden brown the peach dump cake is done. The fruit bubbles up and cooks the dry mix from the bottom up, while the melted butter works it's way down.
Cool for about 10 minutes for serving warm or cool to room temperature. Top individual servings with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top or a big dollop of whipped cream.
Variations on the Recipe
This is such an easy dessert recipe to prepare, but you can add your own special twist. Here are a few suggestions.
- Go Nuts! Sprinkle brown sugar and some chopped pecans or chopped walnuts over the cake mix before pouring on the butter, like I do with my Pumpkin Dump Cake. This adds richness and a satisfying crunch factor.
- Spice it up! Stir in a ¼ to a ½ teaspoon of spices such as ground cinnamon or apple pie spice into any one of the layers of the peach dump cake. I like to add it to the peaches or the butter myself. Another option is to use spice cake mix in the recipe.
- Feeling Fruity! Rather than canned peaches, use other fruits. Try cans of fruit cocktail and make a Fruit Cocktail Dump Cake.
- Use Cold Butter Method make peach dump cake, by slicing butter and arranging the cold butter pats over the cake mix evenly over the whole baking dish area. Some prefer this over melted butter, though it takes longer, since the slices of butter are sure to be evenly distributed. Note: Make sure to cut the slices thinly to cover the entire dump cake.
How Long Does Peach Dump Cake Last?
Leftover peach dump cake is good for a 3-4 days in the refrigerator. [ref] Like a pie, this should not be left out at room temperature for extended periods of time. If it is all getting eaten in an afternoon, there is no need to chill it.
Store Peach Dump Cake
To refrigerate, store leftovers in an airtight container or place the casserole dish with dump cake in the fridge covered well with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This should be done promptly after the peach dump cake has cooled (within 2 hours).
To Freeze, stick to slices of the peach dump cake. It really doesn't make much sense to make a full dump cake to freeze. Package in an airtight container and the pieces will last up to 3 months in freezer.
Yes, you can make this dump cake recipe with fresh peaches, but with changes of course. I highly recommend trying it during peach season.
You will need 5-6 peaches, peeled, de-pitted and sliced. The sliced peaches are then tossed with ¼ cup of brown sugar (add ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, if you like as well).
Frozen peach slices can also be used in the same manner. Simply toss the frozen peaches with the brown sugar.
Top with cake mix and butter as above.
This is also how you can make a nectarine dump cake
NOTE: You may need to adjust bake time, as these options will take a little longer to bake.
Yes, though the thicker syrup is recommended. Light syrup will work fine.
Yes, slow cookers can be used to make dump cakes. Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours. See my Crockpot Cherry Dump Cake for more information.

It was a toss up as to whether I'd make a pumpkin or peach dump cake for Thanksgiving. Right now I'm thinking peach will win out! Either way it will be delicious! 🍑🍰😋

The flavor is 5 stars, but I have to knock it down a star because of the sugar overload. This is not a recipe to make on a regular basis, regardless of its being so easy. Even my sugar-addict stepson said it was too sweet!
FRIDA says
I used 2 cans peaches and 1 yellow cake mix, 1 french vanilla with a can of vanilla frosting as a layer.
So good it took longer to bake though
Robin Gagnon says
The frosting sounds like an interesting addition... like peaches and cream. 😀

This is more like a bread pudding than it is a cake.

I'm calling peach bread pudding..

I made this cake for a funeral. I cut the peaches in half which made more, I also added a 1/2 teaspoon of each, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, which gives a true peach clobber flavor. I added all the juice from 2 cans. I shifted the cake all over the other ingredients.
Served with whip cream, was so delicious.

I haven't made this in a long time. .But I'm making it for an Easter dinner.
My mama used to make this when I was growing up She used to make with fresh peaches and combined with cherry filling.
And Daddy would make homemade vanilla ice cream to go with it.
Hard to believe that was over 50 yrs ago.
So of course I made ths for my family while my daughter was growing up. On top I would crush pecans and add cinnamon and brown sugar. Yum
I can hardly wait to make and serve this.
Indy Leah says
Thanks my family loves the peach dump cake especially the crispy topping. I opted to add a second can of peaches as suggested and will make it that way again. One of the easiest desserts I've ever made.
Arlie says
How can I male the juice in my peaches that is 100% juice into heavy syrup?
Robin Gagnon says
You could strain the juice into a small saucepan and add 2-3 tablespoons of sugar and simmer until dissolved. Honestly, the dump cake should come out OK with the peaches as they are. Probably not worth the extra effort.
Jillian B says
It's hard to believe boxed yellow cake mix canned peaches and butter alone make such a yummy dessert but we loved it!
Geoff says
Delicious. Who would have thought cake mix and canned peaches could be so good.
Rhonda says
I never made a dump cake before. This was so good with ice cream!
Melissa says
I am thinking of making this with frozen peaches. But how does one accurately judge how many ounces (or what size bag) of frozen peaches does one need, in order to equal "5 or 6 fresh peaches?"
Robin Gagnon says
Roughly 4 cups. As long as the peaches cover most of the bottom of the pan it is enough. It does not need to be exact.
Wendy says
I used 2 cans of peaches in heavy syrup with a jar of drained rinsed maraschino cherries. Vanilla ice cream on top made it fabulous.
Aliza Paul says
I always make this with two cans of peach pie filling. It makes plenty of sauce for the vanilla ice cream that way.
Jana Delacruz says
I sprinkle a teaspoon cinnamon over the top of the cake mix before baking. Excellent.
Monica P says
Thanks, this is just the taste of summer I needed today. I used the pats of butter method you mentioned in variations and it worked perfectly.
